Overview & Context
Introduction
The Basingstoke Speed Decathlon is a track and field event held annually at the Down Grange Track in Basingstoke. In traditional athletics, a decathlon is contested across two grueling days of competition. In this fast-paced format, athletes must complete all 10 decathlon events in a single, intense hour.
In addition to designing and building the website, I am proud to sponsor the event. The competition brings together passionate athletes from across the region to test their endurance, speed, and versatility against the clock, creating an unforgettable atmosphere at Down Grange.
Historically, managing entries was an administrative headache. Organisers had to manually coordinate registrations using downloaded Word documents, back-and-forth emails, and manual payment tracking. They needed a modern, frictionless digital solution that could automate athlete sign-ups, generate excitement, and cut admin workload down to near zero.

The website is built with Astro JS, delivering blazing-fast page load times and clean, optimised static code. The lightweight architecture ensures competitors and spectators accessing the website on mobile devices trackside at Down Grange experience zero delay.
Visually, the design pays homage to the local athletics community. I selected the distinctive red color that features prominently on the Basingstoke athletic vest. The energetic red stands out with great impact against the dark-themed backdrop, capturing the high-octane spirit of sprinting and field competition.
Beside the static core, bespoke vanilla JavaScript drives dynamic functionality across the site:
- Real-Time Countdown Timers: Dynamic timers counting down the weeks, days, hours, and seconds to the event start date.
- Interactive Registration Flow: Animated multi-step entry forms guiding athletes seamlessly through details, event history, and competition guidelines.
- Direct Contact System: Integrated validation and messaging handling competitor enquiries promptly.

The organisers no longer spend hours juggling email attachments or inputting Word document entries into spreadsheets.
